We would also like to welcome all our new members and hope that you will soon feel at home. If you are unsure about anything, please ask the instructor or phone the office.
If you as mom or dad’s new year’s resolution is to get fit and trim, why not join our senior classes at Welgemoed. Class times are Mondays & Wednesdays from 18h00 – 19h30 and Tuesdays & Thursdays from 19h00 – 20h00. We have morning classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9h00 – 10h00. There is a substancial discount for families.
Kyokushinkan Welgemoed sent competitors to the Kyokushin-kan World Junior Tournament in Japan to represent South Africa. The following karateka from Welgemoed were selected: Dane Brand and Tarryn van Wyk (u 17), Alistaire Bosman, Robert Thonnard, Salih Dawood (u15), Carl von Maltitz, (u 13) for Kumite and Tarryn van Wyk, Nadia Heunis and Vian Labuschagne for Kata. Michelle Joubert represented South Africa in the All Japan Ladie section. Alistaire and Tarryn received Bronze while Michelle came second in the Ladies division. Well done to all of them. Visiting Japan is really an highlight for any martial artist. It is extremly difficult to fly for so long and have a 7 hour time difference so we feel our karateka did well. We need to be better prepared next time to be able to overcome this handicap.
Then Sensei Sydney attended the Kyokushin World Union Championships in Russia and fought exceptionally well against one of the top fighters and was dominateing initially but ran out of energy in extra time due to the long flight there. The tournament was a great spectacle as it was sponsored by the Russian government with Shihan Yuri Trutnev, the vice Prime Minister of Russia, in charge.

BEACH TRAINING – SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY at 08H00
We want ALL our Karateka and parents including pre-scholars to attend the fun training session at Blouberg beach. We will train on the beach at the end of Table View Boulevard opposite Primi Piate from 8h00 till 10h00. All Karateka must please bring some dry clothes, a towel and a black refuge bag, as we will have a beach clean-up afterwards. There will be NO 8h30 or 10h30 classes at the Dojo. Parents can just wear shorts and a T/shirt as we want you to also do some training. Please come, it will be a lot of fun and there is no cost involved.
SPECIAL GRADING: 15 FEBRUARY 2018
Karateka (white to green belts) who were ready for their grading in October / November 2017 but were injured or could not attend must now prepare for the special grading that will take place at WELGEMOED DOJO on the15th February at 18h15.
CLASS TIMES – GRADE 1’s
The grade 1’s will start with the other karateka, but will only actively train for 45 minutes until March 2018 (1st term). For the remainder of the class the young karateka can watch as they will learn the more difficult techniques. From April they will train for the full hour.
DISCIPLINE IN THE KARATE CLASSES
We ask that parents, when possible, NOT to attend these training classes on a regular basis as we have learned from past experience that parents distract the children. It is like trying to type while somebody is correcting you the whole time. We do not mind if parents watch for 10 minutes to show their interest, but we do not want parents sitting there day after day for the full length of the class. Parents are also requested to be quiet. Some people just keep on talking and it is very disturbing. If you want to discuss anything or make mobile phone calls, please step outside. Your co-operation will be much appreciated.
LIFE LONG INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION FEE – COMPULSORY (Not Pre-Primary children)
Karateka from Grade 1 must be registered in Japan. All students must please pay R150 and bring 1 passport size photo as soon as possible. We also need their full name and date of birth. If you have not yet done this, please do it now. I have been informed by Honbu Japan that we will not be allowed to do any more gradings if students are not registered. We are in the process to get a machine to do the manufacturing of the cards locally so that we can speed up the process.
WE OFFER MORE THAN JUST KARATE : – No extra cost!! We urge all higher belts to join these classes:
WEAPON CLASSES Tuesday from 17h45 – 18h45 (Minimum age 10)
EXTRA KARATE CLASSES: Saturday mornings 08h30 till 10h00 (fighting class) and 10h30 – 12h00 (normal class)
GRADING – GREEN BELTS ;
Karateka who passed the grading to green belt, must please remember that they need to train 3 hours per week. To achieve a higher level of fitness, strength and skill level this is necessary. If this is not possible, please remember that we might ask you to miss a grading to catch up.
TRAINING CAMPS : MAY / SEPTEMBER 2018
These camps are a very enjoyable experience for our higher grades and are compulsory for karateka who want to grade in December 2017 for their brown and black belts. During the International camp we will learn new and interesting techniques from our Japanese Instructors, while we will use the September camp to prepare the karateka for their grading. Other karateka of lower grades are more than welcome to attend. The date has been confirmed from Friday 18 May at 18h00 till Sunday at 16h00 ( International Camp) and September ( Preparation for grading).
