2              FEEDBACK ABOUT MAY / JUNE 2018 GRADING:

We are pleased with the first grading of 2018 but feel that the green belts can improve their suppleness and kata. Most of the karateka are young and the advanced katas takes time to master. Please do some stretching on your own time. Remember that once you reach the level of green belt you should train 3 hours per week. On Wednesday evenings we have special training for the green and brown belts from 18h00 to 19h30 at Welgemoed.

  1. GOSHIN (PRACTICAL) KARATE CLASSES

From Tuesday 24 July at 18h00 we will have classes in Goshin (practical) karate at the Welgemoed dojo for karateka from either purple belt or 12 years old and up. To clarify, this will merely be an extension based on the principles of the Kyokushin-kan syllabus and not a separate style. Training will be in karate dogi (Uniform). When my son, Henry, and I attended a seminar in Switzerland, an instructor from Scotland named Hanshi Marc Howes gave classes in this type of karate. Henry did similar classes in Japan and will teach the classes assisted by Sempai Neill Bruce. There will not be ground fighting but you will be taught how to prevent from being taken down and also how to get out of holds/ grips. A large portion of the class will be focused on self-defence and understanding how techniques from katas can be applied in a practical situation. Face punching training as we as joint manipulation will be taught.    There will be no extra cost.

  1. INTERNATIONAL CAMP  –   MAY  2018

We had a very successful and enjoyable camp. We had great weather at the venue at Melkbosstrand and the Japanese instructor’s knowledge and patience was greatly appreciated. We made some changes to our menu and our new menu also went off very well. Congratulations to Sensei OKEE OKENDE who successfully graded to 3rd Dan Belt (SANDAN),

5              NOVICE KARATE TOURNAMENT –   4 AUGUST 2018

We will host the abovementioned tournament at the Welgemoed Primary school, on SATURDAY 4 AUGUST 2018.     This tournament is designed to give karateka up to Purple belt the opportunity to gain experience before fighting major tournaments.  We will do kumite (sparring).  Experienced fighters who have won WP or SA (excluding Novice) tournament titles, should not take part. The idea is to give our younger less experienced students an opportunity to take part without having to fight any champions.

6              SPECIAL GRADING  – 14  AUGUST 2018

This special grading is only for Karateka that have not graded during May and June due to health or other problems.  This grading will take place at Welgemoed Dojo on TUESDAY 14 AUGUST 2018 at 18h15.  Please ensure that you arrive (dressed in your karate uniform) 15 minutes before the grading time to enable you to register.   Grading fees are the same as on the grading letter and colour belts will be available at R60.00 per belt.   If you are not sure whether you should grade please ask your instructor.
